QUALITY MOTOR REWINDERS TAKE THE INITIATIVE

Members of the New Zealand motor rewind industry are taking the initiative on quality and energy efficiency with the launch of a new independent certification scheme.

The quality code for motor rewind workshops has been developed by Telarc SAI limited and representatives from the rewind industry, with assistance from the Electricity Commission.

Led by CMG Electric Motors in Auckland, the first company in the country to receive certification, a number of progressive rewinders have signed up to become ‘certified motor rewind workshops’ against the code.

While quality codes were not new for the motor rewind industry, the new scheme is different in that auditing and certification is being provided by a party independent of the rewind industry - Telarc SAI New Zealand, said Rod Treder Industrial Programme Manager for the Commission.

“The Electricity Commission is supporting the scheme because of the importance of high quality motor rewinding to electricity efficiency in New Zealand. Motors and motor systems represent more than 90% of the economic electricity efficiency potential in New Zealand industry.

”Rewinding a modern higher-efficiency, three-phase electric motor after the motor fails is a sound investment, provided the rewind is done well. It can be a very expensive choice if it is done poorly.”

“A poorly rewound motor simply wastes energy and over its lifetime could cost the motor user literally tens of thousands of dollars - not counting the associated risk of premature and unexpected motor failure” Mr Treder said.

“Unfortunately, it’s difficult for the motor user to detect the difference between good and bad when the motor comes back from the rewinder. So confidence in the workmanship of the rewinder is vital”.

A number of experienced, professional motor rewinders assisted in the development of the quality code, and the Electrical Apparatus Service Association, the body responsible for many of the rewind standards in the U.S, allowed use of its standards as key technical elements of the Motor Rewind Quality Code.

“There was a high level of recognition in the motor rewind industry of the need for independent quality certification for rewind workshops. Consequently many members are showing enthusiasm for the new code”.

“Most importantly the code provides New Zealand motor users with a means of selecting quality (certified) rewinders to protect the efficiency of their electric motor assets and their precious cash flows” Mr Treder said.

“We encourage motor users throughout New Zealand to seek out and recognise Certified Motor Rewind Workshops as their preferred suppliers.

“When you can’t easily see the quality of the rewind, the scheme gives you the assurance that the rewinder has demonstrated the capability to deliver good quality to an independent assessor against a code embracing international technical standards.”

Facts about the Commission’s industrial motor systems programmes

The Electricity Commission has a number of programmes that support the electricity efficiency of motor systems in New Zealand industry. In addition to the Motor Rewind Workshop Quality Scheme, they include:

  • Motor Bounty Scheme,
  • Compressed Air Systems Efficiency Programme, and
  • Motor Systems Optimisation Programme.
