Rail Safety

  • All rail licence holders (rail Participants) are required to have regular safety assessments
  • Appointed Telarc assessors are approved by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) as external assessors for rail participants.
  • All Rail Safety appraisals are carried out against the Railways Act: 2005

MEETING YOUR SAFETY OBLIGATIONS

All rail licence holders need to be regularly assessed for their compliance to the Railways Act: 2005 - usually once a year. Safety assessment reports document a licensee's performance in adhering to their NZTA approved Rail Safety Case. Operators are then required to respond to the report findings.

ABOUT THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS

An assessment is a constructive process that can assist the rail participant to improve the safety of their rail operation. An assessment is an appraisal; its purpose is to ensure that all requirements of their approved rail safety case have taken place and that specific safety standards are being maintained. The overall objective of the appraisal is to confirm to the NZTA that there is full compliance with the participants documented rail safety case and safety system.

SUPPLEMENTARY ASSESSMENTS

Supplementary assessments may be necessary at times to ensure that remedial actions, generally recommended from an “ordinary safety assessment” have been completed satisfactorily.
